Politeness: A virtue of an elegant woman

“Politeness. now there’s a poor man’s virtue if ever there was one. what’s so admirable about inoffensiveness, I should like to know. after all, it’s easily achieved. one needs no particular talent to be polite. on the contrary, being nice is what’s left when you’ve failed at everything else. people with ambition don’t give a damn what other people think about them.”

Many believe that politeness is but a mask worn to conceal bad impulses. They think that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe any of these. Be certain that those who profess such things are living a miserable life because nothing works for them.

Being polite means being aware of the feelings of other people and respecting them. Who doesn’t want to be treated with respect? Everybody wants respect and wants to see good behavior towards themselves, nobody likes being shouted at or looked down upon.

True politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others. Politeness founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression in a graceful manner of the virtues of an elegant woman. True politeness is the language of a good and humble heart, and those possessing this quality will never be rude under any situation.

This virtue defines the behavior of an elegant woman more. A polite elegant woman will never be heard speaking so as to wound the feelings of another. They will never be seen making others uncomfortable by solely seeking for their own personal convenience.

Having a polite spirit means you are ready to please others and to make them pleased with us, Politeness is the goodness of the heart put into daily practice. There cannot be any true politeness without singleness of heart, sensibility, humility and purity of heart.

To be a truly elegant woman, your manner of speaking should reflect your kind of being. Good character is very important in our society today, though the concept of being polite is gradually forgotten. One of the things that distinguishes an elegant woman from other women is her manner of speaking. Her words are like music to the ears.

An elegant woman will always endeavor to set everyone around her at ease; they are friendly. self-sacrificing and unselfish. You want to be more refined? then you will have to understand and show the gentle courtesies of life. An elegant woman polishes herself with good manners.

The basis of true politeness is in the human heart. Politeness is based upon real kindness and cannot exist where there is brutality and selfishness. It is founded upon love for others. Where there is pure feelings, such as pure love for others, there won’t be any form of hypocrisy and deceit. Being rude will always repel other people, but being polite will always attract people and good friends too.

Even if there are rude people around ( there will always be rude people in the world) try to stand out with your refined character. Politeness forbids any display of resentment. Having a courteous manner will require you having self-control at all times and in any situation.

To have a more polite manner of speaking, remember these:

  • Greet people appropriately with good eye contact and natural smile. Do not blank people even if you are having an annoying situation. Be approachable.
  • Do not answer people with an aggressive tone or shout at them when trying to clarify your words.
  • Try to remember things about the person you are speaking with and make proper comments when necessary.
  • Compliment others when necessary.
  • Never forget your ” please” and “thank you”.
  • Use appropriate words when speaking to someone. Do not rush when speaking. Try to avoid vulgar languages and slangs; it makes you more refined.
  • Listen to the person you are speaking with attentively.
  • Respect other people’s time and opinions.
  • Dress appropriately for every occasion.
  • Be punctual to any meeting.
  • Never pick your nose and ears, in public.
  • Always practice good table manners. Eat quietly and chew with your mouth closed.

“one of the greatest victories you can gain over someone is to beat him at politeness”
