“if you don’t believe yourself, nobody will. Not only that, you won’t be good at loving anyone else. Loving starts with the self.”

-Wayne Dyer

You may ask, what is self-care? Self-care is the practice of improving one’s health. When we practice this as women, our well being and happiness is elevated. Self-care strengthens us emotionally, physically, mentally, intellectually and other aspects of our lives as women. It is very important to take care of yourself, it is not considered being selfish as some may think. As elegant women, we show care to others, so why shouldn’t we take care of our own needs?

How can I take care of myself?

love yourself and accept your femininity

To be truly happy, you have to love who you are, kick out that habit of pretending to be someone else. Accept the fact that you are a woman and you were not made by mistake. Living a fake life is never the answer, it is never going to make you happy; it will only make you miserable! Why? You are not being yourself. Stand in front of the mirror, look at that beautiful woman you are and remind yourself that you are unique and nobody can ever be you. Appreciate your uniqueness!

Eat healthy foods

Cut down on junk foods! Eating healthy foods mean you include a variety of nutritious foods and drinks. A WELL balanced diet provides all the energy you need to keep active throughout the day. The nutrients provided by these foods helps your growth and repairs dead or worn out tissues in your body. Eating properly keeps you strong and healthy; it prevents diet-related illnesses such as cancer. Cut back on salt and limit your sugar intake. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Avoid excessive fatty foods. Drink water often and pick protein and fiber rich snacks instead of those with too much sugar, if you like taking snacks.

Get enough sleep

Numerous studies have shown that adequate sleep can enhance the development of the body. Sleep is essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being. It allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly. Getting enough sleep staves diseases in your body. Sleep is as vital as regular exercise and eating a balanced diet.

Do you know that a good night’s sleep can improve your creativity, decision making and your memory? Why don’t you start getting a minimum of 8 hours of sleep today? Your body will thank you for that!

Other self-care practices that can keep you emotionally and mentally happy.

Avoid gossips

How toxic can gossip be for relationships? When negative information are shared about other people, they get hurt; trust erodes and friendships are destroyed. That doesn’t sound so good right? I wouldn’t like to loose someone dear to me because of gossip neither would I create a problem for myself.

I wouldn’t like to be a gossip; it will definitely ruin my reputation and distance me from my true friends. I don’t want to be left with fake people who are not there for me when I actually need them.

Set healthy boundary for yourself

Lack of boundaries invites lack of respect. I set boundaries not to offend you but to respect myself. Healthy boundaries are the limit you place over your time and other things that concerns you. It helps you stay contented and resilient with who you are and what you have.

Without boundaries, there will not be any respect. I don’t think there is anybody in this world who wouldn’t want respect. Learn to draw the line between things you like and things you don’t like. Visualize and name your limits. learn to say “NO” when necessary!

Form the habit of exercising Everyday

Regular exercise is a good way to take care of your health. Try activities like dancing, running, jogging and other activities that you enjoy doing everyday. Being physically active can improve your brain health, strengthen your bones and muscles, manage weight, reduce the risk of illnesses and improves your ability properly.

Exercises are crucial in burning calories everyday and maintaining healthy metabolism. It may interest you to know that regular exercises increases your energy levels.

Take care of your home

Who wouldn’t be happy entering a clean house? As women, it is important to tidy our homes and remove all those unnecessary things that are hindering fresh air. Make sure that every inch of your house is properly cleaned everyday.

This gives you confidence and happiness whenever you have a guest because you know that there is nothing to stain your reputation and they are comfortable too.

Practice good personal hygiene

Good personal hygiene involves keeping all parts of the body clean and healthy. Wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom. Hand hygiene protects you from germs and bacteria that collect on your hands everyday.

If you don’t feel like washing your hands, always sanitize your hands; this helps in killing germs too. Shower or bathe everyday, I don’t think any elegant woman will actually go days without bathing, that is dirtiness! Bathing everyday keeps you clean and fresh.

Shampoo and condition your hair when necessary; it keeps the hair neat and clean. Brush your teeth everyday, at least twice a day. It could be in the morning when you wake up and in the night when you are about going to bed. Wash your face daily (at least 2 times a day) to remove all the excess oil that accumulates in your face and keep your face fresh.

Keep your nails trimmed and clean, make sure that what you wear are neat and fit you well. Use deodorants or body sprays to have a great smell; don’t overspray them and don’t use the ones that have very heavy scents. A deodorant with a simple smell should do the trick!

Drink enough water

Drinking enough water can prevent or relieve constipation. Water hydrates your body and aids digestion. You should drink water always, especially when you are thirsty. You don’t have to wait till you are thirsty to drink water!

Drinking water helps you avoid some detrimental consequences such as urinary infections and kidney stones. Drink water everyday to prevent dehydration!

Always make time for yourself

Our body also needs attention. When you create time for yourself, you will understand the needs of your body more. Your body becomes more calm and composed when it is not under stress.

Spending some time alone can help you process the things that happened in the day; the mistakes you made, the things that made you happy and how to even better your life. I love making out time for myself because it helps me think and plan better.

I get inspirations when I am alone, and I feel better after I have “talked” to myself. So, it feels like my body and I understand each other better.
